"El Encargo"
"El Encargo", meaning “in the care of” in Spanish, invites people from diverse cultures to allow themselves to be “in the care of” doctors, nurses and technology so healing can occur. The 40 ft x 9 ft mural in oil and two adjacent pillars depict the coming together of the multitude of helping hands – from the nurses and doctors to the medical equipment at the Hospital – offering care and healing to every patient. The mural reflects artist Jose Ortiz’s philosophy that we are all one and should join together to face challenges. It incorporates the bright, vivid colors of his heritage.

The Artist - Jose OrtizJose Ortiz lived a nomadic childhood and “arrived to this world inside the womb of a Tepehuane woman of Mayan descent.” Ortiz had an absent father and a distant mother and was often left “in the care of” others. He is very grateful for that care. He was eventually reunited with his mother, brothers and sisters to become part of a family. He credits the clarity of the memories of his mother with helping him to relive the deeply rooted sentiments of his ancestors and Mayan heritage and, ultimately, achieving success as a painter. Ortiz is the Creative Director of the Alisal Center for the Fine Arts and leads “Hijos del Sol”, working with youth in Salinas. |
