"First Breath - A Celebration of Life"
"First Breath - A Celebration of Life", created by well-known Carmel/Pebble Beach photographer Scott Campbell, is a photography exhibition showcasing 35 black and white portrait giclées of Natividad’s “just about to deliver” mothers, newborn babies and their families. Ranging in size from 20” x 20” to 35” x 40”, the exhibition’s special feature is a series of journalistic-style photographs of “graduates” of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. "First Breath" serves as a focal point for healing through art at Natividad Medical Center by promoting feelings of peace and joy for mothers-to-be and their families as they await their baby’s arrival.
For two days, Campbell set up an on-site “studio” at the hospital to capture the beauty of mothers just before giving birth, fathers, newborns’ first breaths and their first moments together as a new family. The exhibition honors the more than 250,000 babies – some of whom are community leaders today – whose births have been supported by Natividad since it opened its doors in 1886. With "First Breath", Campbell allows us an emotionally sensitive glimpse into the very special first moments for our babies and their families. Campbell was inspired to create the exhibition because, he explains, “We all have a finite number of breaths in our lifetime – the exhibition is a celebration of each special and important ‘first breath’ at Natividad.”
The Artist - Scott Campbell
Campbell’s father – an excellent photographer himself – was a student of famed photographer Ansel Adams, and Campbell has been the recipient of many of those gifts. In addition to photography, Campbell is also an accomplished freediver, having competed internationally.
Campbell can hold his breath underwater for over seven minutes, allowing Campbell to combine his love of freediving with his passion for photography by taking amazing photographs of sea life while holding his breath. His work is most notably showcased in his underwater photography exhibition called "One Breath". Campbell created the "First Breath" photography exhibition especially for Natividad Medical Center.
