One Tiny Miracle: Rosa's StoryRosa Martinez was born at Natividad Medical Center with Down syndrome and two holes in her tiny heart.
She needed surgery but was too small to undergo serious cardiac surgery right away. Natividad’s physicians and nursing staff cared for Rosa as she grew and waited for her operation. Rosa’s parents are from Oaxaca, Mexico. Mr. and Mrs. Martinez didn’t speak English or Spanish, and the family relied solely on the income from the father’s field work. The Natividad Pediatric staff modeled innovative, family-centered care in the face of the greatest challenges when Rosa’s doctor bought a watch, and the nursing staff taught Mr. and Mrs. Martinez how to tell time. The staff then empowered Rosa’s family to care for their baby by setting alarms on the watch to remind them to give medications at the right times.
When the Natividad Pediatric staff learned prior to Rosa’s heart surgery that the family had no photos of Rosa, the nurses even made the family a photo album of this special little girl.
Rosa’s cardiac surgery was successful! Mr. and Mrs. Martinez continue to care for Rosa with advice and support from Natividad’s Pediatric staff.
Like Rosa and her family, many of Natividad’s patients are low-income and have limited education and English proficiency. Natividad’s doctors and nurses know that when a child sick, the whole family needs care, and they consistently model innovation in meeting the greatest challenges every day for patients like Rosa.
