A$34,000 ACTION Grant from the University of California, San Francisco Center for the Health Professions to provide Qualified Medical Interpreter training for bilingual hospital staff and implement “Get REaL!” – a new program to collect race, ethnicity and language data to better identify Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and provide appropriate language services. NMC is currently piloting the Get REaL! project in the D’Arrigo Family Specialty Services clinics.
Jane Finney, NMC’s Quality Director, says about 55% of patients screened were LEPs. “They were matched with qualified medical interpreters, and follow up surveys indicate that 100% of them were able to answer questions about their main problem, what they need to do and why that is important.”
