A $48,500 First Food Initiative grant – the first in California - provides professional staff training, educational materials and supplies to support the hospital’s efforts to attain Baby Friendly USA certification by the World Health Organization by June 2012. The “Breastfeeding is the Best Feeding” grant will help NMC meet standards designed to promote exclusive breastfeeding for babies born at the hospital.
“Since training began, NMC’s use of baby formula has decreased by more than one-third,” says Judy Lavoie, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services. “This is a clear signal that we have made big improvements in the area of breastfeeding as the best feeding for our babies.”
